Ranger Baseball Offense Not Enough to Overcome New Mexico Highlands

Las Vegas, N.M.: Regis baseball had their bats going but it wasn't enough to overtake the potent New Mexico Highlands offense in a pair of slugfests with Regis losing two 18-11 and 13-12.

Regis (16-21, 9-15 RMAC) jumped out early scoring four runs getting two RBI each by junior Jesus Arzaga, homerun, and sophomore Aaron Salvucci, double.  Regis held a slim 11-10 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when New Mexico Highlands (28-13, 18-7 RMAC) exploded for eight to take a commanding 18-11 which held up the rest of the way.

Salvucci and senior Michael Khouri each went 3-for-4 at the plate, each scoring two runs.  Salvucci drove in two runs as did Arzaga, freshman Dave Holland and senior Mike Benton.

Junior Anthony Musielak slipped to 2-4 with the loss going three innings allowing five earned runs.

Regis outhit the Cowboys 14-13 but errors again were the Rangers bugaboo.  They committed six errors in the game which ties a season high.  The Rangers have only committed no errors in two games and have had two-or-more in 29 games so far this season.

Arzaga had himself a weekend in game two.  He went 4-for-4 at the plate with two homeruns including a grand slam and driving in seven runs.  Regis again scored four runs in the first and Highlands also scored two in the first to stay close to Regis.

With Highlands leading 11-5 after four innings, Regis started their comeback.  Regis tacked on one run in the fifth on a J.T. Putt homerun, his ninth of the season.

The Rangers tied the game in the sixth scoring six runs which included the grand slam by Arzaga.  Junior designated hitter Gerard Mohrmann made it back-to-back when he hit a solo shot just after Arzaga's.

Highlands took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth scoring one run to take a 12-11 lead.  Regis responded in the seventh inning when leadoff batter senior Michael Khouri got to third on a three-base error.  Salvucci drove Khouri home on a groundout to the pitcher, tying the game at 12.

The Cowboys started the seventh with a single, after a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, the two runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch by sophomore Bryant Asnicar.  The next batter hit a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score the winning run.

After Arzaga's four hits, Khouri had two in four at-bats.  Asnicar (0-1) dropped his first game of the season going 1 1/3 innings allowing one earned run.

The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow in Las Vegas with first pitch set for Noon.
