Rangers Split Doubleheader with #4 Ranked Emporia State

Denver, Colo.: The Regis Ranger baseball team used their explosive bats to split a doubleheader today against #4 ranked Emporia State.  Regis won the first game 10-2 but fell in the nightcap by a score of 10-9.

Regis used an impressive pitching performance by three Ranger pitchers.  Freshman Kyle Mack, junior Eric Anderson and junior Anthony Musielak combined to scatter just four hits allowing no earned runs.  Mack went the first five innings to earn his second victory of the season.  He struck out three allowing just two hits.  Anderson and Musielak went two innings each allowing one unearned run and just two hits.

The Rangers (7-2) pounded out 16 hits led by Chris Steinbeck and Zach Blakeley who collected three hits apiece.  Steinbeck had two triples and led the Rangers with three RBI.  Aaron Salvucci, J.T. Putt, Patrick Farrell, and Curtis Hornaday each slapped two hits.  Farrell slammed his team-leading fourth homerun in the second inning.  The Rangers fielding woes continued as they made five errors.

The fielding woes again were a thorn in the side of the Rangers and this time it caught with them leading to the 10-9 loss in the nightcap.  Emporia State (2-2) led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Regis erupted for eight runs in the fourth to take a commanding 9-3 lead.  The Rangers capitalized on two Hornet errors and had two singles, a double and a triple to score their eight runs.

Emporia State score three in the top of the sixth to pull to within 9-6.  The final at bat for Emporia State turned out to be an interesting one.  The Rangers committed three errors in the seventh with two of them coming after there were two outs.  They scored four runs, the last on a wild pitch, to take a 10-9 lead.

Regis was unable to score any in the bottom of the seventh letting a win slip through their fingers.

Michael Khouri and Patrick Farrell each had two hits helping the Rangers to nine hits in the game.  Salvucci led the Rangers with two RBI on his fourth inning triple.  Brennan Bonati went four innings allowing two earned runs striking out five.  Steve Falconi received the hard luck loss going three innings allowing just two earned, scattering four hits.

Regis will travel to Grand Junction, Colo. next weekend for a four-game non-conference series against Mesa State.
