Rangers Use Hot Bats to Outpace #4 Emporia State 18-14
Denver, Colo.: The Ranger bats were out in full force on Saturday as they pounded out 16 hits en route to an 18-14 defeat of #4 ranked Emporia State. Regis jumped out to a 12-1 lead after three innings and held on late to earn their sixth victory of the season.
The Rangers (6-1) top four hitters were a combined 9-for-19 with 11 runs driven in. Regis scored seven runs in the bottom of the third but Emporia State (1-1) responded with seven runs in the top of the fourth to climb to within four runs at 12-8.
Regis scored three more in each of the next two innings to take an 18-10 lead. The Hornets scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make the game interesting and the Rangers called on reliever junior Anthony Musielak to close the game. He struck out his only batter to pick up his third save of the season.
Junior outfielder J.T. Putt and senior outfielder Michael Khouri each had three hits to pace the Rangers. Junior first baseman Chris Steinbeck, junior shortstop Jesus Arzaga, senior third baseman Curtis Hornaday and sophomore designated hitter Zach Blakeley each had two hits.
Khouri, Arzaga, Hornaday and Putt each had three RBI for Regis. Senior Kyle Spencer pitched three innings to earn his second victory of the season.
Regis and Emporia State will play two more tomorrow with the first game set for 11 AM.
