Errors Hurt Rangers Against #19 Concordia-St. Paul in 10-Inning 12-9 Loss
Golden, Colo.: Regis and #19 ranked Concordia-St. Paul went extra innings yesterday afternoon in a game played at Darden Field on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines. Concordia-St. Paul scored four runs in the top of the 10th to win the game 12-9 in a non-conference tilt.
Regis (10-11) fell behind 4-0 after four innings but scored four runs in the sixth inning highlighted by a three-run homerun by junior Patrick Farrell, his team-leading eighth of the season.
Concordia-St. Paul (11-2) scored two runs in the ninth inning to pull ahead by one run. In the bottom of the ninth, junior shortstop Jesus Arzaga hit a single down the first base line and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Colt Meacham then popped out to the shortstop while junior J.T. Putt was out number two grounding out to third base. Farrell came through in the clutch again as his single through the left side plated Arzaga from second and sent the game into extras.
The Golden Bears scored four runs on just two hits and two Ranger errors. All four runs were unearned for the 19th ranked Golden Bears. Regis scored one run in the bottom of the 10th on a groundout by senior Dan Butler, but it wasn't enough as the Rangers fell 12-9.
Senior Curtis Hornaday went 3-for-4 at the plate for Regis as they pounded out 18 hits against one of the best pitching teams in the country. Freshmen Dave Holland and Alex Haag came off the bench to each go 2-for-2, while Arzaga, Farrell, senior Gerard Mohrmann, and freshman Bob Terry each collected two hits. Farrell drove in four runs in the game upping his season total to 31, which leads the Rangers.
Regis used 10 pitchers in the game with freshman Mike McElreath getting his first start of the season going two innings allowing just one hit. Junior Zach McBeth was saddled with the loss, his first of the season, going a third of an inning allowing three unearned runs.
