The Regis Baseball Team Falls to CSU-Pueblo 15-10 on Soggy Field
Denver, Colo.: Regis and CSU-Pueblo were finally able to play their first game after the spring snowstorm postponed the first game by two days. When the two teams finally got on the soggy field CSU-Pueblo was able to build a lead early and hold on late as they defeated the Rangers 15-10.
Regis (17-22, 9-16 RMAC) trailed 7-1 after two innings and then in the fourth inning were able to cut the deficit to 7-5. Freshman Dave Holland led off the inning with a solo blast to straight-away center. The next two batters, juniors Chris Steinbeck and Jesus Arzaga reached base via a walk and a single through the left side respectively. Two batters later fellow junior J.T. Putt hit his 10th homerun of the season over the left field fence driving in Steinbeck and Arzaga.
Regis pulled to within 8-7 after scoring two more in the sixth inning. Arzaga once again got on with a single and again he was driven in by Putt, this time on a two-run homerun, his second of the game to left center.
Unfortunately the top of the seventh wasn't what the Rangers were hoping for as CSU-Pueblo (31-13, 20-9 RMAC) plated seven runs to take a commanding 15-7 lead.
Regis scored two in the seventh and one in the ninth inning but it was too little too late as CSU-Pueblo took the first game of the now three-game series 15-10.
Regis out-hit the Thunderwolves 15-14 but were hampered by four errors compared to just one for CSU-Pueblo.
Putt went 3-for-4 at the plate driving in five runs. Senior Mike Benton also collected three hits, while Steinbeck, Arzaga and junior Patrick Farrell each collected two. Farrell and junior Gerard Mohrmann each drove in two runs for Regis.
Freshman Steve Falconi (2-4) took the loss for the Rangers, while Mario Mattivi (8-3) was credited with the win for the Thunderwolves.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first pitch set for Noon and the second game set for 3:00 PM.
