Rangers Squeak by Colorado Christian in Non-Conference Tilt 8-7 this Afternoon
Denver, Colo.: Regis and Colorado Christian played a non-conference tilt on Tuesday afternoon. A few days after Colorado Christian lost to CSU-Pueblo 32-23 in one of the highest scoring games in NCAA Division II history, the Rangers were able to squeak by the Cougars 8-7.
Colorado Christian (11-27) got on the board scoring one run in the first inning. Regis (17-21) got on the board in the second inning when junior Patrick Farrell hit his team leading 11th homerun of the season, a solo shot. Two batters later senior Michael Khouri hit a double to right center and was driven in by Dave Holland's single up the middle to help Regis to a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars tied the game in the third with a run and then the Rangers plated three more in the bottom of the nning. Junior Gerard Mohrmann scored junior Chris Steinbeck from third on a single after Steinbeck led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Following junior J.T. Putt's single, Farrell again came through driving both Mohrmann and Putt in with a double to right center.
Colorado Christian did not go quietly as they tied the game their next at bat scoring three runs.
The Rangers then put another three-spot up in the fifth inning when Mohrmann again drove in Steinbeck this time on a single to right field after Steinbeck walked and then stole second base. After a Putt double, Farrell again came to the plate with runners in scoring position and once again came up with the big hit. His single to centerfield scored both Putt and Mohrmann, giving him five RBI on the afternoon.
Colorado Christian scored one each in the sixth and seventh innings but junior Anthony Musielak and senior Kyle Spencer shut down the Cougar offense over the last two innings. The two pitchers allowed just one hit while striking out four. Spencer pitched the ninth inning for his team leading fourth save of the season.
Sophomore Reuben Gallegos picked up his first win of the season going 2 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and one earned run.
Farrell and Putt were each 3-for-4 at the plate, while Mohrmann and Khouri were each 2-for-3. Farrell's five RBI paced the Rangers, while Mohrmann chipped in with two RBI. The Rangers were 6-for-10 (.600) with RBI opportunities and 9-for-17 (.529) with runners on base. The leadoff batter got on five of the eight innings, while the Rangers limited the leadoff batter for CCU to only get on four out of the nine time.
Regis will now host CSU-Pueblo for a four-game series beginning on Friday with first pitch set for 3:00 PM.
