Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame 2006 Ranger Hall of Fame Inductees AnnouncedDENVER, Colo. (Dec. 8, 2005) - Six individual student-athletes and one team will comprise the 2006 Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame class, it was announced today by RU Director of Athletics Barbara Schroeder. The Induction ceremony will be January 28th, 2006, at a luncheon at the Regis Student Center dining room on the Lowell Campus. The 2006 Class (year graduated in parentheses): Louis Stout, Men’s Basketball (1963): Stout was a four-time All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference choice as a forward for Joe B. Hall’s Ranger squads from 1959-63. Stout also earned Catholic Digest Little-All American honors in 1962-63. After graduating from Regis, Stout was heavily involved in athletic administration. He was/is National Chair of the AAU Coaches Education Program (1992-94), and Chair of the AAU Sullivan Committee (1992-current). He also served on the Kentucky chapter of the NFL Hall of Fame committee and is a current board member of the Kentucky Sports Authority. Ian Ferguson, Baseball (2001): A 21st Round draft choice by Kansas City Royals. Holds school records for single season victories (11) & strikeouts (119). Threw in 101.0 innings in 2000—second most innings pitched in one season in school history. Is the school’s career leader with 4.02 earned run average. Ferguson is listed in top five in a total of 6 career pitching records. He was a two-time (1999, 2000) RMAC Pitcher of the Year. Dave Frederickson, Men’s Basketball (1978): Fredrickson was the star of current coach Lonnie Porter’s initial Regis team in 1977-78. Fredrickson earned 1st Team All-RMAC honors two straight years, and All-America laurels following his senior season. In 1977-78, Fredrickson averaged team-leading numbers in scoring (21.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.0) while leading the Rangers to a 20-7 record and a tie for RMAC championship. Following his graduation, Fredrickson played three seasons professionally in Europe. Theresa (T.D.) Newton, Women’s Basketball (1986): Newton played guard from 1982-86. Newton was a contributor from the beginning, playing in 112 out of a possible 113 games in her four-year career. She led the team in total assists three years and had 564 career assists for a 5.0 average. Newton averaged 7.5 points and 2.8 boards per game in her career. Regis went 66-47 during her tenure, including the first 20-win team in program history (1989-90). Newton graduated as the school’s all-time leader in assists, and ranked in top 10 in points (9th), field goals (9th) and free throws (6th). Corinne (Deters) Veltien, Women’s Basketball (1993): Newton played from 1989-93 and holds school records for free throws (379) and free throw attempts (474). She ranks second in career points (1,308), career rebounds (924) and career rebounding average (8.3). Veltien Ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.800), and posted the 8th, 13th and 14th best single season rebounding totals in school history. Bobby Wallace, Men’s Basketball (1951): Wallace was a starter at guard from 1948-49 through 1951-52. Key member of famed 1948-49 team that established a NCAA record with 36 wins. Led coach Larry Varnell’s squad to the Catholic National Championship—the only national title in school history. 1998 Women’s Volleyball Team: The most successful team in school history. The Rangers went 31-4 overall and 17-2 in RMAC play en route to the RMAC Regular season/Tournament championships. The 1998 Rangers advanced to NCAA II Elite Eight Tournament and produced three All-RMAC Players, including Player of the Year Melinda Almazan. It produced Honda Award Winner (Almazan) and two AVCA All-Americans (Almazan, 1st team; Jeanine Dwyer, 2nd team) and finished #4 in the final AVCA Top 25 poll.
Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame History On February 22, 1997, the inaugural class of the Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame was inducted during a ceremony at the North Denver campus. The initial induction began a process in which the Regis University Athletics Department seeks to remember and honor the accomplishments of outstanding individuals throughout its rich history. The mission of the Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame is to recognize individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to the Regis University tradition of excellence in athletics through their achievements as athletes, coaches or as contributors through service or support to intercollegiate athletics. Following the 1998 induction ceremony, it was determined that future classes would be honored on an every-other-year basis. Regis University Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees
